Fuel Economy - What do you get out of a tank? (3rd gens only)

Hi guys,

New member here.

I have a well maintained Dec. 98 TF Sports

Done 150k on it and have been diligently checking the mileage the last 4 years by recording it in a spreadsheet.

On average (no pun intended) the average has been 8.93 kmpl or 11.19 litres per 100 kms. This is a mixture of freeway and city driving and mostly with Woolies unleaded. Have noticed that the average improves slightly with Shell unleaded. Have not noticed any discernable difference with PULP.

I'm with you on woollies petrol. Eventhough it is 4c/l cheaper with a docket, I'm actually
better of going to BP. For 400km, with petrol at $1.10 at BP and $1.06 at Woollies Caltex,
I'm saving 2 dollars per week, thats $04 a year. Better still, I've found a BP station which
has better fuel again, giving me another $2 per week.
Thus, using Woollies Caltex, I'm getting 7km/l, with the lesser BP, I'm getting 7.5km/l and
with the better BP, I'm getting close to 8km/l.

Hey guys hows things?.. Fuel Economy on my magna is freakin brilliant, I would get between 700-800 klms from a tank absolutly no worries at all (Highway driving), being in the country roads the average speed of that would be 110-115. I have done Brissy to Emerald on one tank of fuel the distance being 974km, admittingly I didnt once step over 100k/h and the average got down to 8.1ltrs/100km

I will admit the A/C does add at least 1.0ltr/100km

The Car is a TH (99) 3.5ltr Sports 5sp, I have the K 'n' N Filter as well as an extra air pipe fitted to bottom of air box. Pacemaker tuned length extractors.
The fuel tank has never seen a drop of normal unleaded fuel, from day one its been Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate. This fuel eco kills any of the "top market cars" although the Camry isnt too far behind it (Drove it for a hire car).

I reset the trip comp every trip and Im disappointed if i get more then 9.0ltr/100km, if trip says 70ltrs used generally thats about 2-3ltrs out at fuel station, this has only been like this since the introduction of the extractors.

Is amazing that you really got so good fuel economy for your Magna.

Most of the time I find that the less mods you have the more Fuel economy you get.

When I was with stock wheels I get about another 50kms more than usual. But however the Verada wheels do give me a better steering and grip on the roads. is a plus minus thingy.

Well, the 16" verada alloys, been lighter than the stock 15" steels should yield better
economy. Less unsprung weight, less energy used to spin the wheels etc. However, there
is a difference between the overall diameter of the wheels:
stock: 205/65R15 = 647.5mm overall diameter
verada: 215/60R16 = 664.4mm overall diameter

So, the verada alloys are 2.61% bigger than you stockies and unless you had you speedo
and odo re-calliberated, you'll be doing 102.61km/hr when the speedo indicates 100km/hr
and for every 100km, your tacho would have only registered 97.39km, thus say if you were
getting 600km per tank before, you'd be getting (indicated) 584.3km. Thats a difference of
15.7 kms. Plus, you are probably driving it alot harder due to better grip, so add a few more
kays and there you have it.

Just out of curiosity, what RPM are the engines doing at steady 90 and 110?

With cruise control my TF 3.0 V6 churns over at ~2025 rpm whilst doing 90 kmph and ~2200 whilst doing 100 kmph

Would lesser RPM's equate to better economy?

Someone’s avatar on here had their ride happily ticking over just over ~2k @ 110. I assume that it was a 3.5 V6.

Also realised that it would vary dependant if the tranny is 4 speed, 5 speed, auto or manual......

At 110 mine ticks over at 2850rpm. My car's a 2002 Ralliart 3.5.

Im the same as Disciple, 5sp man would all be round that figure although the auto's are sitting at about 2000 @ 110k/h, I noticed this when I drove a 380 auto out of adelaide. But it still only managed 9.1l/100...

I drive a TH 1999 Executive magna, only mods are 17” rims, sub, amp and spoiler, when I travel to Moonta that’s about 200km away from where I live, I can get up there and back on a half a tank of petrol doing 100km. only going that fast because im only on my P’s.
